Career Talk Blog | 2016 — Year of the Military Spouse
Hiring Our Heroes announces 2016 is the Year of the Military Spouse!
Hiring Our Heroes is an organization that was founded on the idea of connecting skilled veterans with reputable employers. They’ve always included military spouses in their programs, but this year they are refocusing their efforts to help reduce the level of unemployment among military spouses.
This is great news for military families! Active duty service members who are married say that their spouses’ careers are a top concern, and may even affect their decision to stay in the military. We know by now that military spouses are eager to work in portable and rewarding careers, but it’s not easy to land a job. Hiring Our Heroes is recognizing this struggle and according to their website, they are “developing and improving programs, resources, and best practices for connecting military spouses with fulfilling career options — and connecting employers with the largely untapped talent pool that military spouses represent.”
If you are a job seeker and haven’t already attended a Hiring Our Heroes job fair, add this to your priority list.
Here you’ll be connected with hiring managers who already know you’re a military spouse. They have worked with Hiring Our Heroes to understand the value and skills that veterans and spouses bring to their workplace. These employers are military friendly, know the lifestyle that we live, and aren’t afraid of a future PCS where an employee will have to leave.
In 2016, Hiring Our Heroes will also be hosting a variety of transition summits around the globe. These summits are designed to help military families make a smooth transition to the civilian world. You’ll be provided with a wealth of career information, and spouses of active duty, reserve, guard, gold star, or transitioning are welcome to join. You can check out their upcoming summits here.
Hiring Our Heroes has created a digital experience for the military spouse who is looking to advance their career.
By signing up for a HOH Digital account, military spouses can get access to career mentors, resume building information, and build their networks. In Gear Career, a military spouse career non-profit organization has merged with Hiring Our Heroes to provide great career information and networking opportunities around the world as well!
The Major Group will continue to help military spouses achieve their career goals this year, and we are excited to share with our readers organizations and resources that will help them get there.
